Biography

David was born in Leicester, moving to Burton with his parents in 1962. After Burton Grammar School and Birmingham College he went to the Kings Fund in London after which he worked with Regional Board in Birmingham still residing in Winshill. Shortly after marrying Elizabeth he took a catering post with Staffs CC, based in Burton and moved to Branston. Moving back to Winshill, he used this as a base for a series of senior posts in Leicestershire, before moving to Derby University. He is now retired (at least from formal work!)

Education

DC started his education in Leicester and completed Secondary Education at Burton Grammar School. He undertook an HND in Hotel and Catering Management at Birmingham before attending the Kings Fund at London prior to joining the Health Service. He is also a qualified Further Education teacher.

Career outside politics

After Burton Grammar School and Birmingham College of Food David went into various hotel, retail and residential posts before joining the Kings Fund in London after which he took a series of posts in Hospital Catering. After marrying Elizabeth he took a catering management with Staffs CC, based in Burton, finally moving to a series positions in Leicestershire, culminating in heading a 3,000 staff operation. He also lectures in Wine.

Family / Where you Live

DC moved to Burton with his parents 52 years ago and has lived, in three addresses, in Winshill ever since, other than when in Further and extended education. He married his wife Elizabeth, a Burton girl at St Chads Church, Burton in 1972 moving to Branston, returning to Winshill five years later.

Political career

DC came into politics about 8 years ago when his career as a very senior local government officer was over, it not being prudent to be political in such a role. DC was elected as a Borough councillor for Winshill Ward in May 2007, and successfully returned in 2011 when was appointed Deputy Leader for Partnerships before being elected Deputy Mayor a second time. He is Chair of the “Enhancing Lives” Scrutiny Committee and sits on the Licensing and Standards Committees of the council. He was Mayor in 2010 and Deputy in 2009 and 2013.

Hobbies / Fun Fact

Being a restaurateur David is keen on good food and wine, has a passion for local brewed ale and has been a lifelong member of the Scout Association, which he still serves. He is a life member of the National Trust and a member of English Heritage. He is a Season ticket holder at the Albion.

Achievements

For seven years DC has been active in the Conservative Group who promised and delivered either local tax freezes or cuts whilst maintaining all essential services or improving same. He has, in his Mayoral roles, sought to promote the town and Borough to a wider audience and promoted local industries. He works tirelessly taking up individual concerns and is active on the Committees of many local bodies including the District Scout Executive, Burton and District Arts Committee, the Sports Council, The Beyne Foundation and the Burton Consolidated Charities. He is also an active Governor of both the Beyne School and Towerview Primary.
