Uttoxeter Councillor gets the Kids Digging
Two Junior Archaeological Clubs at the Picknalls and Oldfields Hall Schools have been created thanks to the support of a local Conservative Councillor.
A grant of £954.00 from County Councillor Geoff Morrison has been put to good use by Uttoxeter Archaeological Society in order to get younger children interested learning more about the past.
Geoff Morrison said “The clubs have proved to be very popular and it is hoped that new clubs can be developed at other local schools that show an interest”.
This local funding, accessible through local County Council representatives has allowed the Society to set up clubs in Uttoxeter Schools over the past four years. In any one week during the season over 50 young people aged 5-12 are actively engaged in outdoor activities which help them appreciate what history is and how we find out about the past.
David Denny of the Uttoxeter Archaeological Society said “Without the LMI funds small projects like the Uttoxeter Junior Archaeological Society would be extremely difficult to set up because obtaining funding from national sources can be complicated and long winded. Funds through the Local Members Initiative can be both simple and quick”.
