Conservative Councillors Back Community Road Safety Scheme

Cllr Geof Morrison is camapigning for safer roads in Uttoxeter

Conservative Councillors have supported a unique community scheme to bring traffic calming measures to the busy streets and roads of Uttoxeter. The Council will cordinate volunteers and coordinate grant applications to fund the first Uttoxeter Community Speed Watch Scheme.

Community Speed Watch schemes rely on local volunteers who are trained to operate speed guns and gather evidence of dangerous driving.

Cllr Geoff Morrison, who has been the driving force behind bringing traffic calming measures to Uttoxeter said, "What makes this scheme special is that it is the first one to be set up in an urban area we believe and we hope that it will forerunner of many more".

At least 6 Volunteers are sought to operate the scheme, who will be properly trained by speed enforcement trained Police Officers before they begin operating at suitable locations agreed . Data collected from these operations will be used to inform and influence deployment of other traffic calming measures and can lead to enforcement measures.

The Council is now calling on community minded citizens of Uttoxeter. If anyone can give up a few hours of their time to help get this scheme established please contact Uttoxeter Town Hall on 01889 565973 or Councillor Geoff Morrison on 01889 565973.
