Work on the building of new changing rooms and a second artificial turf pitch at Shobnall Leisure Complex has finished. The new facilities were officially opened by the Mayor of East Staffordshire, Conservative Councillor David Leese, on Tuesday 8th March.
In 2015, a joint funding bid by Burton Hockey Club and East Staffordshire Borough Council resulted in an award of £320,000 from Sport England to fund the development of a second artificial turf pitch and to part fund the build of new changing rooms at the popular leisure complex.
As part of the Council’s commitment to sport, leisure, and wellbeing the Council committed £190,000 to the project. Burton Hockey Club contributed £80,000 towards the project, which has been raised by members and their families and friends and successfully secured a further £50,000 from the Hockey Foundation. The development forms part of the authorities Outdoor Sport Delivery and Investment Plan for the borough. The Plan established the principle of developing multi sport outdoor ‘hubs’ of which Shobnall Leisure Complex is one of five within the Borough.
The Conservative Councillor Colin Whittaker, Deputy Leader for Cultural Services, said: “The sporting hub principle outlined in Council’s Outdoor Sport Delivery and Investment Plan means that our residents and sports clubs will benefit from a variety developments and sporting improvements throughout the borough. Shobnall Leisure Complex is a unique facility that provides our local sporting enthusiasts with an opportunity to participate in multiple sports throughout the year. The new outdoor changing rooms and artificial pitch will really enhance the centre’s appeal and I’m sure local clubs and sports people will enjoy the new facilities.”
Ian Brown, Burton Hockey Club Chairman, said: “Aspiration for the clubs own facility has been around for many years and as the club has grown over the past 10 years we have created demand that exceeds the existing facilities. After the sad passing over our former president Peter Ellis in 2011, he left us a small legacy and in his memory we have been busy fundraising under the control of Steve Morrison as Astro Appeal Chairman. After all the hard work it’s extremely exciting to see finished product now the facilities have opened. This project will significantly enhance Shobnall as a sporting hub and allow the continued development of Hockey and other field sports in the town. It’s fantastic that ESBC has worked in collaboration with us to reach such an achievement.”
