Annual Report 2010/11

Andrew has published two versions of his Annual Report - one for Uttoxeter and the north of the constituency, and one for Burton and the south of the constituency - setting out some of the things that he has been doing since he was elected Member of Parliament for Burton and Uttoxeter.

Success for Better Broadband Campaign

Burton’s MP Andrew Griffiths has welcomed BT’s announcement that Burton upon Trent’s telephone exchange will be upgraded to allow super-fast broadband connections by the end of next year, following his campaign for better internet services in the town.

The new fibre-optic connections will allow for speeds of 40Mb/s and will means that internet users with a fibre connection will be able to take advantage of much faster download and upload speeds for things like watching online video, sharing high resolution photos and exchanging large files.

Rome or Bust!

Two intrepid teenagers from Burton will be setting out to cycle from the centre of Burton to the Italian capital of Rome in June in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Chris Betts, (19), from Stretton and George Crossley, (also 19), from Tutbury, will be leaving from Burton’s Town Hall on Thursday 5 June to cycle to the world famous Coliseum in Rome.

Friends at school, and members of the De Ferrers Academy Young Enterprise team, QWERTY, that reached the National Finals in 2009, Chris and George have spent the past two years planning their charity challenge.

MP hauled over hot coals

Burton’s MP Andrew Griffiths is taking part in this Saturday’s Firewalk at Burton Albion to raise money for the Queen’s Hospital Scanner Appeal. Along with other brave volunteers, he will be walking 20 feet over hot coals at a sizzling temperature of 550 degrees Celsius.

Communities come together to rededicate war memorial

Andrew joined representatives from all parts of the local community at a service of rededication for Stretton war memorial, following recent vandalism.

Andrew organised the event to demonstrate that the community was united in condemning the extremist graffiti, which was painted on the memorial last month.

He said: “I think what the Muslim community demonstrated was their respect for the memorial and all those brave people that have died, but it also showed the determination of all the communities in Burton to work together.

Relief as "vital" bus service saved

A vital bus route, which provides a lifeline for many residents - particularly pensioners - has been saved after Andrew intervened.

Arriva decided to withdraw the 10 and 10A services, which link Burton with the Acorn Inn in Anslow, to save costs.

Andrew contacted Arriva and the County Council on behalf of local residents who rely on the 10/10A bus services after being contacted by a number of concerned constituents.

More support needed to help Uttoxeter racecourse

Andrew Griffiths has called for action to support for the Uttoxeter racecourse in a House of Commons debate on the future of the horseracing levy.

The debate was tabled by Conservative MPs, who called on the Government to bring forward proposals to improve the system of funding for racing and the relationship between racing and bookmakers.

MP and MEP Working Together for Burton’s Brewers

A top level meeting between Burton’s politicians and the brewing industry has taken place.

A meeting arranged by Burton’s MP Andrew Griffiths brought together the Chief Executive of Molson Coors, Mark Hunter, and Conservative MEP for the West Midlands, Malcolm Harbour. Andrew brought Mr Harbour along to Molson Coors as he is the Chairman of the hugely influential Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection in the European Parliament.

Andrew Applauds State-of-the-Art Recycling Centre

The new recycling facilities at the Tesco in Uttoxeter really is state-of-the-art. It rewards residents with Tesco Clubcard points when they recycle metal food and drinks cans.

Everyone recognises we need to increase recycling to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill and to help the environment.

For Uttoxeter residents to be rewarded with points that can allow them to get money off their shopping or to claim other gifts means that everyone wins. I hope that it will be rolled out nationwide.

Burton passes 1,000 votes for high-speed broadband

The campaign to bring super-fast broadband to Burton received a major boost today when it passed 1,000 votes in support of the town.

The campaign, part of the BT “Race to Infinity” competition, had been supported by 1,052 local residents by mid-afternoon today. Between midday on Monday and midday Tuesday, more than 220 people voted for Burton – making it the most successful day of the campaign so far.
